The magnificent Nippon Budokan sports hall is hosting the “Ready Steady Tokyo-Karate” Test Event on Monday, September 9th. As the Karate world is counting the days to the debut of the sport in the Olympic Games, the discipline continues taking steps towards the start of the Karate competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Organised for operational trial purposes, the “Ready Steady Tokyo- Karate” Test Event aims at streamlining the Karate competition at the Games. The test event follows the schedule foreseen for day 2 of the Karate tournament at the Olympic Games. Both Kata and Kumite bouts will be held on day 2 of Karate at the Games scheduled for August 7, 2020.

Over 30 local competitors are participating in the test event. The flow of the competition and all the operations around a Karate tournament are being verified thus producing an exact representation of the Karate competition at the Games. Karate’s readiness ahead of its debut in the Olympic Games is therefore being confirmed.

“I am so honoured to be part of this test event. I am very moved to participate in this event because I know that in a year the best karatekas in the world will be competing here in Nippon Budokan. I will root for them as a spectator,” said Japan’s Ruika Sao who competed in both Kata and Kumite competitions of the test event.

The test events are dress rehearsals to confirm and improve the competition and Games operation capabilities in order to ensure a successful operation during the Olympic Games. The test events are being organised by the International Federations and the National Federations as well as by the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee.
