African Karate shows progress at UFAK Zone 3 Championships

The Zone 3 of the African Karate Federation celebrated its senior Championships this past week in Abidjan (Ivory Coast) where the popularity of the sport in the region was further showcased. The tournament was attended by WKF 3rd Vice President Bechir Cherif who represented Karate’s international governing body at the event. 

The Zone 3 of the African Karate Federation celebrated its senior Championships this past week in Abidjan (Ivory Coast) where the popularity of the sport in the region was further showcased. The tournament was attended by WKF 3rd Vice President Bechir Cherif who represented Karate’s international governing body at the event. 

The competition took place in Abidjan from May 10 to 12 and demonstrated the progress of the sport in the area. Hosts of Ivory Coast topped the medal table of the tournament followed by Burkina Faso. 

The economic capital of Ivory Coast also hosted the general assembly of the UFAK Zone 3. Yugo Oumar who currently is the Burkina-Faso Karate Federation president was elected to lead the Zone 3. 

Local officials demonstrated the importance of Karate in the region by actively participating at the event. The UFAK Zone 3 Championships was attended by Ivory Coast Sports Minister Claude Paulin Danho and National Assembly president Amadou Soumahoro among other local authorities. 

The UFAK Zone 3 is one of the seven areas that divide the African Karate Federation. The Zone 3 comprises the countries of Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Niger, Nigeria and Togo.
