Promising karatekas of the Pan American countries are gathering this week in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) as the 29th edition of the PKF Cadet, Junior & U21 Championships is being held there. Over 700 young athletes from 20 nations are clashing in the iconic Brazilian city to showcase the progress of the sport in the region.

Competitors aged 12 to 20 years-old are competing for the gold medals in the 49 categories at stake. The competition began with the first kata categories, and Pan American powerhouses of the sport are already showing their pre-eminence in the tournament. In the cadet kata competition, the USA showed dominance by claiming two spots in the finals (Mason Stowell and Kaitilyn Shimohara) while Canada’s Amelie del Rosario and Venezuela’s Ricardo Perez de Abreu complete the finalists.

Meanwhile, the finals of the Junior Kata categories will see a double confrontation between representatives of Venezuela and the USA. Luis Garcia Parra of Venezuela and Kevin Stevens of the USA will clash in the male competition, and USA’s Zoe Meszaro will meet Venezuela’s Victoria Hernandez Moyeda in the female event.

The quest for gold in the category of choreographed movements of the younger competitors in Rio de Janeiro will have Colombia’s Karen Forero and Oonah Gamboa of Canada competing in U14 Female Kata while young athletes from the USA, Brazil and Ecuador are still clashing to reach the final stages in U14 Male Kata.

The event will continue until Saturday when the last of the finals will be decided. The last edition of the PKF Cadet, Junior & U21 Championships took place last year in Buenos Aires (Argentina). Brazil topped the medal table with 39 medals including 12 golds, followed by the United States with 32 medals and Mexico with 29 medals.
