The World Karate Federation mourns the passing of PKF Vice President Emerson Velasquez. A driving force of Karate in the Americas, Emerson Velasquez was the president of the Central American Karate Confederation and the president of the Nicaraguan Karate Federation. He passed away Tuesday due to complications caused by the COVID-19.

Mr. Velasquez headed the Karate Federation in his home country of Nicaragua for the past two decades. During his tenure, he achieved some of the biggest success for the sport in the country and organised six Central America Senior Championships, three Central American and Caribbean Championships and two Iberoamerican Championships, among other events.

The national Olympic Committee of Nicaragua mourned Mr Velasquez’s loss and defined him as “the greatest leader of Karate Do in the history of our country”.

In addition to his positions of responsibility in his country, Mr Velasquez was the third Vice President of the Pan American Karate Federation and member of the Executive Committee of the continental federation.

“From his Vice Presidency in the PKF, he worked to unite and develop Central American Karate, a task that he has undoubtedly accomplished since all the countries of the Central American area are working relentlessly for the progress of the sport in the region and in all the Americas,” said PKF President José García Maañón.

“Mr Emerson Velasquez will be sadly missed. His passing is an irreparable loss for the Karate family of the Americas. He was passionate about the sport, and his contribution to the progress of Karate in his country and within the ranks of the PKF has been very valuable to the development of Karate. In the name of the WKF and the whole Karate family, I send our deepest condolences for his loss,” said WKF President Antonio Espinós.

The thoughts and sympathies of the WKF and entire Karate Family are with Emerson Velasquez’s family and friends, as well as the entire Nicaraguan Karate community at this difficult time.
