The Referee Commission of the World Karate Federation met Thursday via videoconference to analyse advancements in the overhaul of the judging body of Karate’s international organisation. The prospects for the refereeing team in the months to come were also overviewed.

Joining the meeting from WKF new headquarters in Madrid, WKF President Antonio Espinós and WKF Referee Commission chairman Javier Escalante headed the gathering.

The delight with the standard of refereeing at WKF’s events and the quality of technological innovations introduced by the federation to support officials at its major competitions - namely the improved video review system - were highlighted at the meeting.

“I am pleased to see the outstanding level of refereeing that we have at our events. However, we need to revamp the structures of the refereeing body of our organisation to adequate the judging to the continuous progress of our sport. The role of the Refereeing Commission is crucial in this regard. Now that we have more time to prepare for our Olympic debut in Tokyo 2020, we need to make sure that the quality of our referees continues matching the long-established excellence of our sport,” said WKF President Antonio Espinós.

The restructuring of the Referee Commission and the modifications in the referees’ evaluation system for next year were also on top of the agenda. Additionally, the working conditions of the judges at events were evaluated.

In this sense, and in order to raise awareness among all the Karate refereeing community around the world, a set of videoconferences conducted by WKF Referee Commission chairman Javier Escalante will be held in the next months. These meetings aim at giving referees the opportunity to share their concerns and expectations with WKF top officials as well as producing a frame of reference for judges to provide their feedback on their situation amid the current coronavirus pandemic.
