WKF mourns passing of Karate icon Fumio Demura

The WKF is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Karate icon and renowned master Fumio Demura.

A legend of Karate and one of the most influential martial art masters of the last decades, Demura passed away on April 24 at the age of 84.

In addition to his contribution to the development of Karate through countless books and scholarly work, Mr Demura took martial arts to high levels of popularity through his career in movies. Sensei Demura acquired notoriety as the stunt double and inspiration for the role of “Mr Miyagi” in the films “The Karate Kid”.

Mr Demura participated in the meeting of Japanese Karate masters which was held in Los Angeles (United States) in October 2022 on the occasion of the launching of the “Guardian Girls Karate Project” at the residence of the Consul General of Japan in Los Angeles, where he discussed the situation of Karate around the world with WKF President Antonio Espinós.

WKF President Antonio Espinós said:

“It is with great sadness that we learn of Sensei Fumio Demura’s passing. He was one of the greatest icons of Karate and a true pioneer of martial arts. His contribution to spreading Karate around the world through his participation in movies made him one of the greatest ambassadors for Karate worldwide. He will be truly missed.”
