WKF mourns passing of international referee Hatem Fathy

It is with great sadness that the WKF learned of the passing of Hatem Fathy, international referee from Egypt. 

It is with great sadness that the WKF learned of the passing of Hatem Fathy, international referee from Egypt.

One of the most respected judges in the world, Hatem Fathy passed away Friday due to a heart attack.

International referee in Kata and Kumite, top-level AA, Mr Fathy had a prominent career officiating Karate events around the world over an 18-year period. Mr Fathy was a 6-Dan black belt in Karate and was truly passionate about the sport.

Member of the Egyptian Karate Federation and Cairo-resident, Mr Fathy was a financial consultant by trade and earned his degree in Financial Consulting by the Harvard University. He also had a PHD in Sports Management by the Arab Academy of Sciences Technology.

“On behalf of the entire Karate Family, I wish to express our deepest condolences to Mr. Fathy’s family and loved ones. Our thoughts are with them during this very difficult time. Mr Fathy was an excellent referee and always conducted himself with the utmost professionalism. He will be missed by all the Karate family,” said WKF President Antonio Espinós from Salzburg.
