WKF Entourage Commission discusses competitors' safety at online meeting

The WKF Entourage Commission met via videoconference to discuss improvements in competitors’ safety and the implementation of educational tools to improve the awareness on the prevention of injuries.

Headed by Commission chairman Souleymane Gaye, the meeting was attended by the members Nassim Varasteh (CAN), Gilles Cherdieu (FRA), the WKF Medical Commission chairman Rafael Arriaza (ESP), and the WKF Athletes Commission Chairman Davide Benetello (ITA).

Concussion awareness was one of the main topics on the agenda. Different studies were shared that conclude that Karate is considered a safe sport regardless of its status as a contact sport.

The correct recovery and “Return to Play” procedures were discussed while the commission agreed on the development of an online survey to improve education on concussion.

The introduction of the “Concussion Education” topic in coaches and referees briefings and the creation of a “6 step” Return to Play protocol were also analysed.

“The safety of our competitors is paramount to the WKF. The proposals and conclusions of the WKF Entourage Commission are essential in ensuring that Karate continues to be a completely safe sport and that measures continue being implemented to guarantee the wellbeing of our athletes. I want to thank Chairman Souleymane Gaye and the Commission members for their efforts and hard work,” said WKF President Antonio Espinós.
