Tzu-Yun Wen of Chinese Taipei is one of Karate’s first Olympic athletes. The representative of the Asian nation qualified to take part in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 after finishing among the top four in the standings of Female Kumite -55kg.

“Although there have been many difficulties on the way, I did it!”, said Tzu-Yun Wen.

The 26-year-old karateka earned the ticket to the Olympic Games as the third-ranked athlete in the category of Female Kumite -55kg, behind leader Serap Ozcelik Arapoglu of Turkey and Anzhelika Terliuga of Ukraine and ahead of Japan’s Miho Miyahara and Iran’s Sara Bahmanyar.

It is the culmination of a deserving career of over eight years. Tzu-Yun Wen has claimed eight medals in 15 appearances in the last two seasons. The Chinese Taipei representative won bronze at the World Championships and gold medals at the 2019 Karate 1-Premier League Dubai, 2018 Karate 1-Premier League Rotterdam, 2016 Karate 1-Premier League Istanbul, 2013 Karate 1-Premier League Jakarta and 2012 Karate 1 Korea, her first top award in international competitions. 

“I am glad I have reached this milestone together with all of those who have supported me so much all this time,” said Tzu-Yun Wen after winning the ticket to Tokyo 2020.

The black belt second-Dan in Shotokan is one of the front-runners of the category of Female Kumite -55kg. She has three continental titles (2015, 2017 and 2018) and two bronze medals at World Championships (2016 and 2018) as her biggest achievements thus far.

“I have always thought that if you fight hard enough for your dreams, then one day they might come true,” said the karateka of Chinese Taipei.

Tzu-Yun Wen has also a silver medal at The World Games 2017 and the gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games under her belt. This year, the 26-year-old athlete has taken bronze medals at the Karate 1-Premier League events in Paris and Salzburg.

“I’m very excited (for this achievement) and I will definitely be more prepared for the Olympic Games,” added Tzu-Yun Wen, who has her eyes set on her new goal.

“Earning the ticket to the Games is just the beginning!”
