Ten athletes represented Poland at The World Games 2017 in Wroclaw. It was a special occasion for the Polish delegation that participated in the Karate competition at The World Games as they enjoyed the chance to shine at home while carrying the flag of the host nation. It was even more special time for Kamil and Kamila Warda since they could do it side by side as brother and sister.
“It is an honour for us to be here as twins, as brothers and sisters. It is nice to have someone close to you to share this experience with. We will always remember this moment,” said Kamila Warda.
“I am very happy that I had the opportunity to compete here in front of my family and my friends. I have my sister with me and my friends came here to support me so for me it was great that I could reach the semifinals,” added Kamil Warda.
Kamila Warda took part in Female Kumite -68kg category. The Polish karateka was defeated by world champion Alisa Buchinger of Austria and by the subsequent winner of the tournament Lamya Matoub of Algeria. Warda beat Amy Thomason of New Zealand to close her participation in the pool round of the tournament. The third-dan Shotokan karateka from Poland claimed a final fifth place in the competition.
Meanwhile, Kamil Warda was one of the few Polish competitors who made it to semifinals. The third-dan Shotokan karateka took the spotlight with his performance in the Male Kumite -84kg category and gave Polish fans reasons to celebrate with his qualification to the bouts for the medals. The Lodz native shocked with his victory over favourite Aykhan Mamayev of Azerbaijan, tied the bout against Jorge Perez of Dominican Republic and was defeated by European champion Ugur Aktas of Turkey in the pool round. In the semifinals, the karateka who is placed in the 62 position in the world ranking was beaten by gold medallist Zabiollah Poorshab of Iran. In the bout for bronze, the local karate could not defeat Ugur Aktas of Turkey so the Polish champion finished in the fourth position of the event.
Now that the Karate competition is over, the two Polish karatekas have the opportunity to savour the experience. The World Games 2017 will always have a special place in the reunions of the Warda family.
