The International World Games Association (IWGA) is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Founded on May 21st, 1980, the IWGA held the first edition of The World Games a year later in Santa Clara, USA. The World Karate Federation is a founding member of the IWGA, and WKF President Antonio Espinós acts as one of the members of the IWGA Executive Committee.

“We have come a long, long way since 1980,” says IWGA President José Perurena in a press release. “The founding congress was held in Seoul, South Korea with twelve founding members, of which ten are still members of the IWGA today. In the meantime, The World Games family has grown to 37 members. This number alone is an expression of the enormous development that the IWGA has undergone over the past 40 years. The same applies to the event itself: The World Games present competitions at the highest level and have meanwhile achieved worldwide visibility.”

Karate has been part of the sports programme of The World Games since the first edition of the multi-sports event in 1981. Both modalities of the sport – Kata and Kumite – had been included in the list of disciplines of The World Games since its inception, with Karate playing a crucial role in the success of the organisation.

“It is a big honour for the WKF and for the Karate family to be such an active force within The World Games. We have been an active member of the IWGA for 40 years now, and we could not be happier to see the association not only flourishing but turning into the respected, successful, and glorious organisation that it is today. On behalf of the Karate family, I want to wish the International World Games Association a happy 40th anniversary and our best wishes for its bright future,” said WKF President and IWGA Executive Committee member Antonio Espinós.
