Referees discuss final updates on Karate's Olympic competition

The referees to officiate at the Olympic Games today met one final time

As Karate’s Olympic debut is only three days to go, the referees to officiate at the event in Tokyo today met one final time to discuss the last details of the judging protocols of the competition. WKF President Antonio Espinós welcomed the Olympic referees at Nippon Budokan arena for a momentous meeting.

“Many years from now you will remember that you were here and that you played a crucial part in this historic moment. I would like you to enjoy the unique opportunity you have earned to be here,” said WKF President Antonio Espinós.

The meeting was headed by Mr Espinós and had the participation of WKF Referee Commission chairman Javier Escalante, WKF General Secretary Toshihisa Nagura, WKF CEO Sara Wolff, WKF Technical Commission chairman Esteban Perez, and WKF Athletes’ Commission chairman Davide Benetello. All the Olympic referees were in attendance.

The gathering at Nippon Budokan was also an opportunity to share the delight of the refereeing body ahead of Karate’s Olympic debut as well as the fruits of their labour through many months and years of preparation ahead of this moment.

“I am sure that all of you feel proud and honoured to be here and that you will showcase your efficiency and equanimity to contribute to our success here in Tokyo. Our goal this week is to show the world that we are a sport worth remaining in the Olympic programme. I am convinced that all of us together will achieve exactly that,” added Mr Espinós.

The Karate competition at Tokyo 2020 is scheduled for 5-7 August 2021 at the Nippon Budokan, with medals being awarded on each competition day.
