Mediterranean Games to put highlight on Karate?s elite

The best karatekas from Mediterranean ries will clash for glory in Tarragona (Spain) for the 18th edition of the Mediterranean Games. The multi-sport event that gathers 4000 athletes from 26 nations competing in 33 sports disciplines with the Karate event being held from June 23 to 24.

The Cambrils Pavilion in Tarragona hosts the Karate tournament of the 18th Mediterranean Games. The competition starts on Saturday, June 23rd with the preliminary rounds of Female Kumite -50kg and 55kg and Male Kumite -60kg and -67kg. The first competition day ends at 20.00 with the tournament resuming on Sunday, June 25th with the categories of Male Kumite -84kg and +84kg and Female Kumite +68kg. The final day of Karate action is scheduled to finish at 13.00 with the last medal ceremony. 

Some of the Karate stars of the Mediterranean ries are expected to take the spotlight at the event. High expectations are posed in the delegation of the organising ry as Spain will compete with a high-profile representation formed by ten athletes. European Championships bronze medallist and six-placed on WKF World Ranking Laura Palacio is among the top local karatekas. Nine-placed on WKF Ranking Cristina Vizcaino and 16th-placed Rocio Sanchez also aim at taking the flag of the host ry to the top of the podium. 

The last edition of the Mediterranean Games was held in 2013 in Mersin (Turkey). The organising ry topped the final medal table with eight medals and six golds. Egypt and Italy also registered successful performances with eight medals and two golds respectively. Grand Winner Serap Ozcelik of Turkey, World Champion Giana Lotfy of Egypt or Italy’s Stefano Maniscalco were among the heroes of the 2013 Mediterranean Games.
