Local Karatekas and Karate Stars shine on opening day of Karate 1-Premier League in Istanbul

Serap Ozcelik of Turkey and Spain's Sandra Sanchez were crowned as big stars on the first day of the Karate 1-Premier League being held in Istanbul. Turkish Karatekas gave local crowd reasons to celebrate with four gold medals, while fan favourite Rafael Aghayev suffered the big upset of the day as the World and European champion lost his first bout of the season to end claiming the bronze medal.

Turkey's Serap Ozcelik earned her third consecutive gold medal in Karate 1-Premier League events celebrated in Istanbul thus stating an impressive domination on the Female Kumite -50kg category in tournaments held at home ground. The Turkish Star beat Ukraine's Kateryna Kryva in the final to complete a perfect performance in Istanbul.

Karate Star Sandra Sanchez of Spain won her fourth gold medal this season following her victories in Karate 1-Premier League tournaments in Dubai and Sharm El-Sheik and in 2016 European Championships so to extend her domination in Female Kata. The Spanish idol stated her condition of front-runner of the category for the upcoming World Championships after beating Negin Bagheri Bazardeh of Iran in the final.

Erman Eltemur stars in the big upset of the day

After completing back-to-back victories in Karate 1-Premier League in Dubai and in 2016 European Championships this season and demonstrating an outstanding domination of the Male Kumite -75 Kg category, superstar Rafael Aghayev arrived in Istanbul to continue showcasing his status of leading force in today's Karate. However, the Azerbaijan idol lost his first bout in almost two years after being defeated by Turkey's Erman Eltemur. The local hero clashed against the World and European champion in a disputed and sensational kumite in the pool phase. The European championships silver medallist of Turkey avenged his defeat against Aghayev in Montpellier by earning a tight victory 4-3. Azerbaijan's star recovered to claim bronze medal, while Eltemur beat compatriot Sabir Ahmet Uygur in the final.

Turkish fans had more reasons to celebrate in the first day of the seventh event of Karate 1-Premier League in Istanbul, as Muhammet Ali Yilmaz in Male Kumite -67 kg and Ali Sofuoglu in Male Kata also claimed gold.

Chinese Taipei's Tzu Yun Wen in Female Kumite -55 Kg, Slovenia's Tjasa Ristic in Female Kumite -61kg and Abdullah Alharbi of Saudi Arabia in Male Kumite -60kg also reached the top of the podium in the opening day in Istanbul.

The action will continue on Sunday with the finals of the rest of the categories.
