The best Karatekas in the world are ready to showcase their outstanding abilities in the 2017 edition of The World Games. As the Karate competition at the multi-sport event is less than a week away, excitement grows among Karate fans since the biggest names in the sport will clash for glory at the competition being held next week in Wroclaw (Poland)

Who will take gold at The World Games?

The collection of world champions, Karate heroes and up-and-coming talents to be gathered at the event in Wroclaw guarantees plenty of thrilling kumites and unforgettable katas at the anticipated two-day competition.

While The World Games are usually open to big surprises, these are some of the names to watch in the Male categories at The World Games:

MALE KATA CATEGORY TO BE BREATHTAKING.

One of the highlights of the Karate competition at The World Games will be the Male Kata category. With some of the best Kata karatekas of all times competing at Wroclaw, excitement is building up as the biggest Kata heroes will be face to face in the outstanding quest to gold. Two-time World champion and current title-holder Ryo Kiyuna of Japan acts as frontrunner of the competition since the recently proclaimed Asian champion has not lost a bout in nearly four years. Defending champion and two-time World Championships gold medallist Antonio Diaz of Venezuela will try to repeat the victory that he achieved in Cali in 2013. Meanwhile, world ranking leader Damian Quintero of Spain will try to be the alternative in the spectacular event.

DOUGLAS BROSE AIMS AT WINNING MISSING TITLE.

In Male Kumite -60kg, Douglas Brose of Brazil hopes to win the one title missing in his outstanding career. The two-time world champion and four-time Pan American title-holder claimed silver at the event in 2013, so the intention of the Karate Star will be to reach the top of the podium this time. Defending world champion and world ranking leader Amir Mehdizadeh of Iran will get to the event after his victory at the Asian Championships last weekend. The Iranian ace will also be among the favourites, together with Spain's Matias Gomez, Geoffrey Berens of The Netherlands and France's Sofiane Agoudjil.

MALE KUMITE -67KG UP FOR GRABS.

Many candidates are hoping to succeed at the Male Kumite -67kg category. Defending World champion Jordan Thomas of England aims at a new gold medal this year after his victory in the Karate 1-Series A in Toledo, while world ranking leader and World Championships bronze medallist Andres Madera of Venezuela hopes to confirm his status of rising top karateka. Promising Steven Dacosta of France and world ranking second placed Yves Martial Tadissi of Hungary are among the candidates to shine in the category.

ALL EYES ON THOMAS SCOTT IN OPEN MALE KUMITE -75KG.

Traditionally one of the most disputed categories, the Male Kumite -75kg competition at The World Games will be a highly open contest, even more so due to the absence of superstar Rafael Aghayev. The defending world champion’s injury puts the attention on Karate Star Thomas Scott who will try to use his world ranking leader status to take gold in Wroclaw. Among the candidates, European Championships silver medallist and fan favourite Stanislav Horuna of Ukraine, current Pan American champion Hernani Verissimo of Brazil and local karateka Maciej Jan Boguszewski of Poland.

RYUTARO ARAGA AGAINST TOP KARATEKAS IN MALE KUMITE -84KG.

World champion and dominating force Ryutaro Araga will try to regain the title he claimed in Cali in 2013. The Japanese Karate Star saw his two-year winning streak halted at the Karate 1-Premier League in Dubai in March, in his last international appearance. The 20 year-old Goju Ryu karateka will then attempt at going back to the winning ways that made him one of the big names of today’s Karate. The competition will be fierce since 2014 World champion Gogita Arkania of Georgia, world ranking second placed Zabiollah Poorshab of Iran, European champion Ugur Aktas of Turkey and Pan American champion Jorge Perez of Dominican Republic will be among the karatekas trying to cause the big upset in Wroclaw.

HOST OF FIRST-CLASS ATHLETES HOPING TO IMPRESS IN MALE KUMITE +84KG.

The outcome of the Male Kumite +84kg will be even more unpredictable than usual as world champions, title-holders and continental champions aim for gold at the event. Germany’s Jonathan Horne is the defending title-holder after his triumph in 2013 and one of the names to watch. Also a big favourite, World champion Sajad Ganjzadeh of Iran will try to get back from the defeat he suffered at the final of the Asian Championships last weekend so to confirm his world ranking leader status. Meanwhile, promising and World championships runner-up Achraf Ouchen of Morocco, Japan’s Kawaga Hideyoshi and Chile’s Rodrigo Rojas will also be on the list of candidates to gold.
