The 12th edition of the “Gomel Open Cup” was successfully held in Belarus thus showcasing the progress of the sport in the country amid the current difficult circumstances caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Over 500 athletes from 24 clubs gathered in the capital of the Gomel region to clash for the 49 medals at stake. The tournament was open to competitors from underage categories to senior karatekas, and while athletes from neighbour countries had competed in the event in the previous editions of the championship, the restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic limited the list of competitors to local karatekas.

Organised by the Belarusian Karate Federation, the Sport and Tourism Department of Gomel Municipality and the Youth Public Society “Gomel Region Karate Federation”, the event followed the national guidelines to ensure the safety of competitors.

The “Gomel Open Cup” continues the efforts of many national federations around the world to return the sport to the new normal.
