Karate and the new normal: Belarus host successful national Karate championships

The Olympic training centre Stayki in Minsk welcomed the 2021 Belarus senior championships from January 23 to 24.

The Olympic training centre Stayki in Minsk welcomed the 2021 Belarus senior championships from January 23 to 24. Over 80 athletes gathered at the event which followed the national countermeasures and WKF COVID-19 protocol as more and more Karate organisations around the world are returning to activity.

The event crowned the top competitors in the country in both kata and kumite categories. Organised by the Belarus Karate Federation, the tournament congregated 83 athletes and 35 coaches from 22 national Karate organisations as well as nearly 30 judges.

Using the advanced facilities of the Olympic training centre Stayki in Minsk which were updated to host top-level competitions under the new COVID-19 regulations, the event followed the national and WKF countermeasures to guarantee the safety of competitors and staff members.

Among the guidelines applied at the competition, the tournament was held behind closed doors, as access to the venue was limited to participants and organisers. Mandatory use of face masks, constant temperature checks, intensive sanitation, and limited gatherings of participants were reinforced during the whole event.

The national championships in Minsk represent one more effort of the Belarus Karate Federation to host events in the country following the celebration of the Youth Karate Championships in October and the 12th edition of the “Gomel Open Cup” last November.
