Karate 1 Premier League Matosinhos to take Karate excitement to new heights

Karate 1 Premier League Matosinhos to take Karate excitement to new heights

The second Karate 1-Premier League event of the season takes place in Matosinhos (Portugal) from April 22 to 24.

  • The Karate 1-Premier League Matosinhos continues the season of Karate’s first-class series of international tournaments in 2022 after the opening event in Fujairah (UAE)

  • The tournament takes place in Matosinhos, in the north of Portugal. The event is held at the Matosinhos Sport and Congress Center.
  • It is the second time that a Karate 1-Premier League event travels to Portugal after the successful Karate 1-Premier League in Lisbon last year.

  • The event is scheduled from April 22 to 24.
  • The eliminations will be held on Friday and Saturday (from 09.00 to 20.30 local times GMT+0).
  • The bronze medal bouts are scheduled on Sunday, from 10.00 to 14.00. The finals will be held on Sunday from 15.30 to 18.30

  • Over 300 athletes from 58 countries are registered to participate in the event.
  • The participation in Karate 1-Premier League is limited to a maximum of 32 athletes per category.
  • Italy is the country with a greater representation in Matosinhos with 30 athletes, followed by Spain with 28, and Turkey and Ukraine with 18 athletes each.
  • Despite the conflict in their country, 18 Ukrainian athletes have managed to travel to Matosinhos to compete, including Olympians Stanislav Horuna, Anzhelika Terliuga, and Anita Serogina.

  • The competition follows a Round Robin format in the eliminations. The quarterfinals, semi-finals, and medal bouts follow a knockout system.
  • The Round Robin system has been introduced this year in Karate 1-Premier League events.
  • The introduction of Round Robin gives athletes more opportunities to compete at the highest level. With the previous system, 50% of competitors went home after the first bout. Now athletes need to fight a minimum number of bouts to move to the final stages.

  • No less than six Grand Winners will compete at the #Karate1Matosinhos. Karate Stars Damian Quintero of Spain, Serap Ozcelik Arapoglu of Turkey, Meltem Hocaoglu Akyol of Turkey, Merve Coban of Turkey, and Gogita Arkania of Georgia will make their debut as Grand Winners in Matosinhos.
