The upcoming Karate 1-Premier League event to be held in Madrid (Spain) will be incorporated into the Olympic qualification process. The World Karate Federation decided to add the tournament to take place in the capital of Spain from April 17-19 in the qualification pathway to the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 after the cancellation of the Karate 1-Premier League Rabat. 

The upcoming Karate 1-Premier League event to be held in Madrid (Spain) will be incorporated into the Olympic qualification process. The World Karate Federation decided to add the tournament to take place in the capital of Spain from April 17-19 in the qualification pathway to the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 after the cancellation of the Karate 1-Premier League Rabat.

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the Karate 1-Premier League Rabat was cancelled following the decision of the Moroccan authorities to take extraordinary measures to control the outbreak of Covid-19 in the country. The tournament in Rabat was the last event of Karate’s first-class series of international competitions before the closing of the Olympic qualification by standings. In order to give athletes the best chances to make it to Tokyo 2020, the WKF Executive Committee approved the inclusion of the Karate 1-Premier League Madrid in the Olympic pathway as the substitution event of the cancelled Karate 1-Premier League Rabat.

This decision is taken in full and strict compliance with health and safety regulations to safeguard all athletes and delegations’ members. Following the indications of the national authorities in Spain, the Karate 1-Premier League Madrid will be held behind closed doors.

The WKF remains fully committed to the last stages of the qualification towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games with careful consideration of the well-being of its athletes and delegations.
