Hosts dominate day 2 of Karate competition at African Games

After an outstanding opening day of the Karate competition at the 2019 African Games in which Morocco claimed 10 spots in the finals, the host ry continued on winning mode in day 2 and reached the title-deciding bouts in all three categories at stake today. Karate demonstrated its sporting spirit with another thrilling day in Rabat.

The representatives of the organising nation reached the title-deciding bouts in all three categories at stake today as Karate demonstrated its sporting spirit with another thrilling day in Rabat.

Just as it happened in Female Kata, karatekas from two of the main powerhouse nations of the sport in the continent will meet in the final of Male Kata. The finalists in this category will be Mohammed El Hanny of Morocco and Ahmed Shawky of Egypt. The karateka from the host ry surprised and used the support from the stands to qualify for the final. El Hanny dominated the pool with “Unsu” kata and a score of 25.54. Meanwhile, Ahmed Shawky made it to his second continental final this year since the Egyptian Kata ace is the current UFAK silver medallist. Shawky prevailed in the pool with “Kanku Sho” kata and a score of 25.74.

The sensational performance of local karatekas continued in Female Team Kumite competition as the Moroccan team qualified for the final of the category. The host squad defeated Egypt in semi-finals 2-1 and will fight for gold against Congo. The representatives of the central African ry surprised and produced a forceful demonstration of abilities in their side of the pool. Congo upset Senegal in semi-finals by a convincing 11-4.

The Moroccan Male Kumite team followed the successful performance of their team-mates and also qualified for the final of the category. In a thrilling semi-final, the local side beat favourites of Egypt by 3-1 thus completing the perfect result for the host nation today. In the other side of the pool, Algeria showed power and presented a dominating performance to make it to the final. The Algerian side defeated Botwsana in semi-finals by 15-2.

The competition will conclude on Sunday with the bronze medal bouts and the finals of all the categories.
