Historic Friendship Games finish in Great Lakes region

The 2018 Friendship Games ended in the African Great Lakes region. The 2018 edition of this multi-sport event gathering youngsters from Burundi, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo was memorable as it showcased an extraordinary demonstration of trans-border cooperation and sports diplomacy. Karate was one of the sports featured at the event organised by Peace and Sport. 

The 2018 Friendship Games ended in the African Great Lakes region. The 2018 edition of this multi-sport event gathering youngsters from Burundi, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo was memorable as it showcased an extraordinary demonstration of trans-border cooperation and sports diplomacy. Karate was one of the sports featured at the event organised by Peace and Sport. 

Over 150 youngsters and 50 animators from five community centres located in Burundi, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo participated in the 2018 Friendship Games. The three-day event was marked by sports seminars, capacity building and peace-building workshops. Youngsters took part in 12 disciplines, which were designed to promote positive values and Peace and Sport “Sport Simple” methodology.

The WKF joined forces with Peace and Sport to make the 2018 Friendship Games a success. Karate’s international governing body contributed providing equipment and sending a representative to oversee the Karate activities there. The Karate seminars and competition of the 2018 edition of the event were headed by WKF representative and international coach Mr. Fodé Ndao. 

The Friendship Games are organised annually by Peace and Sport and the respective host countries’ National Olympic Committees. Peace and Sport currently helps to support six youth centres within the African Great Lakes region, and use sport to promote social inclusion, education, and intercultural dialogue.
