The European Karate Federation regrets to inform that the 2020 EKF Senior Championships have been cancelled because of the coronavirus outbreak.
Scheduled to be held in Baku (Azerbaijan) from March 25 to 29, the 2020 EKF Senior Championships has been cancelled due to the evolving Covid-19 public health threat. The decision to cancel the event has been taken because of the actions of the event organisers of the national federation of Azerbaijan, and upon the resolution of the government of Azerbaijan to take extraordinary measures to fight the coronavirus outbreak.
Among these measures, restrictions to international travellers arriving in the country are now applied, a two-week quarantine is being imposed on individuals reaching Azerbaijan, new and existing electronic visas have been revoked, and hotel bookings are being withdrawn, among others.
As the health and well-being of the athletes is an absolute priority for the EKF, this decision follows the determination of Karate’s international governing body to ensure the safety of competitors, staff members and officials.
Following the decision of the WKF Executive Committee, the cancellation of the 2020 EKF Senior Championships implies that the Olympic standings remain unchanged. The 2019 EKF Senior Championships which were held in Guadalajara (Spain) will be then the last European continental event to be included in the Olympic standings.
