All you need to know about #Karate1Rabat

The second Karate 1-Premier League event of the season will be held in Rabat (Morocco) from May 12 to 14. The event will be available LIVE on the WKF YouTube channel and on many TV networks around the world.

WHAT

  • The Karate 1-Premier League Rabat is the second tournament of the season of Karate’s first-class series of events.   
  • The opening event of the year was held in Cairo (Egypt) from January 27 to 29.
  • After Rabat, the 2023 Karate 1-Premier League will travel to Fukuoka (Japan) and Dublin (Ireland).

WHERE

  • The tournament takes place at the Multi-Purpose Stadium Prince Moulay Abdellah of Rabat.
  • Morocco are one of the biggest powerhouse nations of the sport in the region and have hosted many first-class Karate events, including Karate 1-Premier League, World Junior, and continental championships among others.
  • The city of Rabat has welcomed Karate 1-Premier League since 2017 and the tournament is one of the flagship events of the season.

WHEN

  • The event is scheduled from May 12 to 14
  • The eliminations will be held on Friday and Saturday (from 09.00 to 20.30 local times, GMT+1).
  • The bronze medal bouts are scheduled on Sunday, from 10.00 to 14.00. The finals will be held on Sunday from 15.30 to 18.00

WHO

  • Over 370 athletes from 56 countries have registered to participate in the event.
  • Participation in Karate 1-Premier League is limited to a maximum of 32 athletes per category.
  • The powerhouse nation of Italy presents the largest delegation with 37 athletes. Japan with 30 karatekas and Ukraine with 22 also compete with a large number of competitors.
  • Ten of the 12 Grand Winners will take part in the event in Rabat. It will be the first time that the new Grand Winners will wear the special karategi with the golden embroidery, after their crowning in Cairo.

HOW

  • The competition follows a Round Robin format in the eliminations. The quarter-finals, semi-finals, and medal bouts follow a knockout system.

WHAT ELSE

  • The WKF’s ambitious initiative to fight Gender-Based Violence, “Guardian Girls Global Karate Project” will also be presented in Rabat. A demonstration of self-defence for women will be showcased during the finals on Sunday. Learn more about this project here.
