All you need to know about #Karate1Cairo

The third event of the 2024 Karate 1-Premier League will be held from April 19 to 21 in Cairo (Egypt). The tournament is set to capture the attention of fans as it will be crucial in the quest to crown the next Grand Winners.  

WHAT

  • The Karate 1-Premier League Cairo is the third tournament of the season of Karate’s first-class series of events.   
  • The first event of the season was successfully held in Paris in January while Antalya (Turkiye) hosted the second tournament of the year.
  • After Cairo, the series of international tournaments will conclude in Casablanca (Morocco), from May 31 to June 02.

WHERE

  • The tournament takes place at the Cairo International Stadium.
  • One of the biggest Karate hubs in Africa, Cairo welcomes Karate’s first-class series of events for the second consecutive year. In addition to the event in 2023, Cairo hosted the Karate 1-Premier League in 2021.
  • Previously, Egypt had also organised Karate 1-Premier League events in 2016 and 2015, in the city of Sharm El-Sheikh.

WHEN

  • The event is scheduled from April 19 to 21.   
  • The eliminations will be held on Friday and Saturday (from 09.00 to 20.30 local time, GMT+2).
  • The bronze medal bouts are scheduled for Sunday, from 10.00 to 14.30. The finals will be held on Sunday from 15.30 to 18.00

WHO

  • No less than 369 athletes from 58 countries have registered to participate in the event.
  • The powerhouse nation of Italy presents the largest delegation in Cairo, with 38 athletes. The birth nation of the sport, Japan, with 32 athletes, and the hosts of Egypt with 26 athletes also present large delegations in Cairo.     

HOW

  • The competition follows a round-robin format in the eliminations. The quarterfinals, semi-finals, and medal bouts follow a knockout system.

WHAT ELSE

  • No less than 9 out of the 12 Grand Winners have registered to participate in Cairo. With the exception of Japan’s Hikaru Ono and Ayumi Uekusa, and Ukraine’s Anzhelika Terliuga all the Grand Winners will compete for glory in Cairo.

  • The tournament in Cairo also offers fans the opportunity to witness the quest to become the new Grand Winners. The current leaders of the standings in each category are:
    • Female Kata: Maho Ono (JPN) and Mo Sheung Grace Lau (HKG) – tied at 1560 points
    • Female Kumite -50kg: Yorgelis Salazar (VEN)
    • Female Kumite -55kg: Airi Shima (JPN)
    • Female Kumite -61kg: Atousa Golshadnezhad (IRI) and Fatima-Zahra Chajai (MAR) – tied at 1140 points.
    • Female Kumite -68kg: Elena Quirici (SUI)
    • Female Kumite +68kg: Maria Torres (ESP)
    • Male Kata: Kakeru Nishiyama (JPN)
    • Male Kumite -60kg: Eray Samdan (TUR)
    • Male Kumite -67kg: Said Oubaya (MAR)
    • Male Kumite -75kg: Abdalla Abdelaziz (EGY)
    • Male Kumite -84kg: Youssef Badawy (EGY)
    • Male Kumite +84kg: Taha Tarek Mahmoud (EGY)
