All you need to know about #Karate1Cairo

The first Karate 1-Premier League event of the season will be held in Cairo (Egypt) from January 27 to 29. The event will be available LIVE on the WKF YouTube channel.

WHAT

  • The Karate 1-Premier League Cairo is the first tournament of the season of Karate’s first-class series of events.   
  • After Cairo, the 2023 Karate 1-Premier League will travel to Rabat (Morocco), Fukuoka (Japan) and Dublin (Ireland).

WHERE

  • The tournament takes place in the capital of Egypt of Cairo. The event is held at the Cairo International Stadium.
  • It is the second time that Cairo hosts a Karate 1-Premier League, after welcoming the event in 2021.
  • Cairo also hosted a tournament of the 2022 Karate 1-Series A and the 2021 UFAK Championships, among others.

WHEN

  • The event is scheduled from January 27 to 29. 
  • The eliminations will be held on Friday and Saturday (from 09.00 to 20.30 local times GMT+2).
  • The bronze medal bouts are scheduled on Sunday, from 10.00 to 14.00. The finals will be held on Sunday from 15.30 to 18.00

WHO

  • Over 380 athletes from 58 countries have registered to participate in the event.
  • Participation in Karate 1-Premier League is limited to a maximum of 32 athletes per category.
  • Hosts of Egypt are the country with a greater representation in Cairo with 59 athletes, followed by Italy with 30, and Turkiye with 24 athletes.
  • Nine of the 12 Grand Winners and seven World champions will compete in Cairo.

HOW

  • The competition follows a Round Robin format in the eliminations. The quarter-finals, semi-finals, and medal bouts follow a knockout system.

WHAT ELSE

  • The new Grand Winners will be crowned in Cairo. The event counts as the last tournament of the 2022 season for the ranking of the Best of the Best of each category, following the cancellation of the event in Moscow last year.
  • After the medal ceremony on Sunday, the new Grand Winners will be proclaimed in a special ceremony. 
  • The Grand Winners are the Best of the Best in each category. They get to wear the special karategi with golden embroidery on the shoulders.
  • The event in Cairo will also represent the inauguration of the WKF’s ambitious initiative to fight Gender-Based Violence, “Guardian Girls Global Karate Project”. Learn more about this project here.
