All you need to know about Karate at African Games

The best karatekas in Africa travel to Accra (Ghana) to clash for the gold medals in the Karate competition of the African Games. The event also crowns the kings and queens of the sport on the continent, as the tournament acts as the continental championships.
WHAT
- The African Games are the biggest multi-sport event in Africa.
- The 13th edition to be held in Accra gathers over 5000 athletes across 23 disciplines.
- The event in Accra represents Karate’s ninth appearance in the sports programme of the African Games since its debut in 1991.
WHERE
- The tournament takes place in Accra (Ghana).
- The Karate competition will be held at Borteyman Sports Hall.
WHEN
- The full African Games are scheduled from March 4 to 23.
- The Karate competition is slated for March 7 to 9.
- The first day comprises the categories of Male Kata, Male Team Kata, Male Kumite +84kg, Male Kumite -84kg, Male Kumite -75kg, Female Kumite +68kg, Female Kumite -68kg, and Female Kumite -61kg.
- The second day will have the categories of Female Kata, Female Team Kata, Male Kumite -60kg, Male Kumite -67kg, Female Kumite -50kg, and Female Kumite -55kg taking the stage.
- The final day will be focused on Male and Female Team Kumite.

WHO
- The event gathers the best male and female karatekas on the continent.
- The powerhouse nation of Morocco topped the medal table of the last edition of the UFAK continental championships after claiming 17 gold medals. Egypt and Tunisia followed on the medal table.
- Karate stars such as World champion Youssef Badawy of Egypt, promising karateka Ali Jina Abdel of Morocco, former world champion Ahlam Youssef of Egypt and up-and-coming kata ace Aya En-Nesyry of Morocco were among the winners of the last UFAKcontinental championships.
- At the last appearance of Karate in the African Games, in 2019, Morocco claimed the top spot on the podium with 15 medals and 9 golds. Sanae Agalmam of Morocco, Yasmin Attia of Egypt, Thamer Slimani of Tunisia, and Achraf Ouchen of Morocco were among the big winners of the event.

- The competition follows a knockout system.
- The finals are staged at the end of each competition day.
WHAT ELSE
- The Karate competition at the African Games will have even more relevance as the tournament acts as the senior continental championships. Therefore, the new continental gold medallists in each category will come out of the event in Accra.
- Also, the event is crucial for the future of African karate since the tournament is also a qualifier for the upcoming World Team Championships to be held later this year. The winners of the competition in team divisions will earn a ticket to the World Team Championships in Pamplona.
