Karate added to Games of Small States of Europe

30-05-2017

The General Assembly of the Games of the Small States of Europe has agreed to add Karate to its sports programme. The decision was taken by representatives of the nine National Olympic Committees gathered in San Marino ahead of the 17th edition of the multi-sport event.

Following this landmark resolution, Karate will make its debut in the programme of the 2021 Games of the Small States of Europe to be held in Andorra. The addition of Karate to the biennial, multi-sport event featuring nine European countries with a population of less than one million people represents yet another breakthrough accomplishment for the discipline after the inclusion of the sport in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018.

“We are thrilled that Karate is going to be part of the Games of the Small States of Europe. We are sure that Karate will bring an added value to the event, and we are especially pleased for the opportunity to feature Karate’s sportsmanship, spectacularity and virtue on this great stage. This decision is yet one more recognition for Karate and a further example of the increasing relevance of our sport,” said WKF President Antonio Espinós.  “I want to thank Small States of Europe Karate Federation President Andreas Vasileiou for his hard work and his efforts to make possible this great news for all the Karate family,” added Mr. Espinós.
